Shredder Guide

Choosing a shredder:

  • Number of people using the shredder
  • The number of sheets to be shredded
  • The confidentiality level of your data
  • The types of media to be destroyed (Paper, Cd's, Credit Cards)¬†
  • The money budgeted for the shredder¬†
  • The kind of workplace the shredder will be placed at

Choosing Shredder Cut Types

Strip-cut Shredders

Strip Cut Shredders are ideal shredders for personal and small office document disposal.

• Shred more paper at a time
• Faster shredding speed
• Lower maintenance
• Less expensive

Cross-cut Shredders

Best for offices and departments where medium security standards are in practice.

• Greater security
• Reduces shredded bulk
  (About 80% more than
  strip-cut)

High Security Shredders

Government approved highly secure shredders that can shred sensitive documents into dust.

• Superior security
• Government/NSA approved
• Overheating Protection
• Energy Saving Mode

Other Considerations

Choosing the size of the shredder is very important as the shredders width is based on the size of the documents you will be shredding. The width varies and increases as model numbers change which ranges from 8 inches to 18 inches. (The standard paper size 8 1/2 x 11, easily fits in any Fellowes shredder)

The Feed opening is the part of the paper shredder from where the paper enters. (Office Shredders offers feed openings ranging from 9.25" to15").Continuous forms will constantly jam if you have a smaller feed opening. Another very important consideration while selecting the right shredder is the security level of the shredder .Your security depends on the confidentiality of the materials you are shredding. There are 6 security levels defined for shredders depending on cut size. Strip-Cut shredders are P-2 level 1 shredders, Cross-Cut shredders are P-3 and P-4 level 2,3 shredders, Micro-Cut shredders are P-5, P-6, P-7 level 4,5,6 shredders. Three very important features of a shredder include sheet capacity, shredder speed and run time. All shredders have a run time which depends on the size of the shredder. This is the time a shredder can continuously shred before it needs to cool down.

While purchasing a shredder it is vital to know how many people will be using the shredder. Personal shredders are designed for 1 person, lights use shredders are for 1-2 users, medium use shredders are for 3-5 users, while heavy duty shredders are made for 6 plus users. For larger offices, a heavy duty shredder can be used by 6-10 people. For 10 or more users, you should choose a departmental shredder. Many times purchasing a bigger more powerful shredder pays off depending on your volume. If you are doing very little shredding the low models will be sufficient.
